Julie Bishop can expect a tap on the shoulder from some of Australia's most lucrative companies after announcing she is retiring from federal politics.

The former deputy Liberal leader revealed on Thursday she will not make another run for parliament at the federal upcoming election.

Speculation is now mounting that Ms Bishop is in talks with ANZ and Qantas to secure a board role with either organisation.
