A woman who was stung by a box jellyfish has relived the horrific moment she felt the deadly creature's tentacles wrap around her leg.

Prue Davey, 22, from Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, was standing in murky water trying to pull in her boat when she felt a burning pain. 

The fisherwoman quickly realised her life was in danger.    

'It starts like you've been bitten...[and] electrocuted at the same time. Sort of like a searing burn,' Ms Davey told the ABC.  

'I had probably 20 tentacles all over me....I ended up with about a metre's worth of burns.'
