Charlotte-Mecklenberg police said in a statement on Monday that 23-year-old John Bocek was accused last week of assaulting a 16-year-old girl and stealing her phone. Then shortly before 4am on Sunday, police said Bocek broke into the girl’s home in the 11400 block of Glen Abbey Way near Charlotte’s Providence Country Club. Once inside he killed her father, 51-year-old Matthew Chaplin, and her 15-year-old friend, Jenna Hewitt, who was a guest for the night. The uninjured 16-year-old girl ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911. Police said Bocek shot himself. The accused gunman was taken to a hospital, where he later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Matthew Chaplin (left and right), 51, was shot to death. His 16-year-old daughter (pictured left with her dad and older sister), was unharmed. The double murder-suicide took place inside Chaplin's home near Charlotte’s Providence Country Club Police say they had been searching for Bocek to serve warrants charging him with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in the previous incident targeting Chaplin's daughter, reported Charlotte Observer. Investigators characterized the double murder as a domestic violence case, but at the press conference Monday, they would not say whether Bocek was in a relationship with Chaplin's 16-year-old daughter, or whether she was the intended target of the attack. Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office records indicate that Bocek pleaded guilty in January 2018 to charges of assault on a female and cyberstalking. Police had been searching for Bocek to serve warrants charging him with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon targeting Chaplin's teenage daughter (pictured in mugshots from 2017, left and 2019) Bocek pleaded guilty in January 2018 to charges of assault on a female and cyberstalking The 23-year-old's criminal record also included multiple arrests and convictions, including for a probation violation in 2014. At the time of his suicide on Sunday, Bocek had several criminal cases pending against him involving charges of possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Matthew Chaplin is survived by the 16-year-old girl and her older sister. The girls' mother, Donna-sue James Chaplin, passed away in August 2016 after battling an illness.
