A former newsreader has stood by disgraced Cardinal George Pell throughout his trial for sexually abusing teenage boys.

Pell's loyal friend and executive adviser for the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney Katrina Lee was by his side as he walked from court in Melbourne to cries of 'rot in hell' after the verdict became public.
