American Stock Exchange-listed Cann Group has constructed the country's largest state-of-the-art medicinal cannabis growing facility near Melbourne Airport. Spurred on by new legalisation, the 37,000 sq m site is expected to cost the company $100million and employ 170 staff. Using its size as a measure, the facility is capable of producing more than $13million worth of marijuana. Medicinal cannabis was legalised for patients in exceptional circumstances in Victoria from 2017, with other states quickly following suit. According to data by New Frontier Data, 4000 sq m can yield about $1.5million worth of marijuana. In April, a new national scheme was implemented - intended to streamline the process for patients waiting to get access to the drug. Cann Group CEO Peter Crock told 7 News the unassuming factory nestled in suburban Melbourne aimed to supply the widening demand created by the new laws. The oil from the plants can be used to treat epilepsy, and mother Jo Freeman said the product had stopped her son Cooper's chronic epileptic fits. 'It's a life-changer without a doubt - 100 per cent it was the cannabis oil,' she said.
