Witnesses reveal seeing a fight break out before a man 'brandished a pistol' ...

A witness who was working during a fatal shooting at a boxing tournament has recalled the moment he thought he would die.

A man in his 30s was killed and two men in their 20s were injured when two gunmen opened fire at the Melbourne Pavilion in Kensington, north of the city, about 10pm on Friday.

Police said the incident was 'targeted' and all three victims are known to officers.

Witness Chris Griffin, 18, who was waiting tables at the venue said he saw a scuffle break out before a man brandished a gun.

Of the three, one was shot in the foyer of the venue, where a pool of blood was photographed by a distressed onlooker

Nearby cars were riddled with bullet holes and there were passing pedestrians fortunate not to be in the firing line

'(There was) a bunch of screaming and stuff, swearing, there were 10 people pushing up against each other, then there were four or five shots,' he told the Herald Sun.

Mr Griffin said there was about a second between each shot and he was overcome by fear.

'There was a feeling of dread, panic when the gunshots went off. The feeling of, are we going to die?' he said.

Mr Griffin said his mind raced and they were unsure whether the gunmen were shooting at random or targeting people.

Witnesses were 'extremely freaked out' and tried to find shelter to hide from the attack, according to Mr Griffin.

'There was blood everywhere. I saw the (dead man's) body on the ground,' he said.

Mr Griffin also saw another man who had a gunshot wound on his leg.

The gunmen remain on the run, with authorities issuing a desperate plea for information.

One attendee of the boxing tournament said the night would go 'down in infamy' after the gunshots rang out.

He said there were 'at least' four gunshots, while another said they heard nearly a dozen.

A motive for the shooting is yet to be established, though ringside witnesses said families on two tables began shouting at each other from across the room.

The verbal stoush escalated into 'shots fired everywhere' as people hid under tables and ran for their lives.
