The man convicted in the vicious murder of a gay man in 1999 in Alabama that drew national outrage has himself been killed 20 years later.
Steven Eric Mullins, 45, an inmate at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Alabama died after an assault on Tuesday, according to AL.com.
Mullins was treated for multiple stab wounds after being airlifted to a hospital, but officials say he died from the injuries on Thursday.
Mullins had been serving a life sentence in the February 19, 1999, murder of Billy Jack Gaither, a gay man from Sylacauga, Alabama.
The homophobic murderer was in turn stabbed to death by a man serving a 25-year sentence in a 2008 murder for hire.

Christopher Scott Jones, 50, is being charged with the fatal stabbing of Mullins by the Alabama Department of Corrections’ Investigations and Intelligence Division.
Jones was found guilty for being among six people involved with killing five men in 2008 over a matter of $450,000 in missing money for a drug cartel.
