A builder was jailed for four years today after using a Go-Pro camera to record the trail of destruction he caused as he used two diggers to smash up five newly-built retirement homes.

Daniel Neagu, 31, sang, whistled and shouted 'whoop whoop' as he demolished the McCarthy and Stone retirement cottages at Royal Gardens, Ermine Street, Buntingford, Herts.

In half an hour, he caused over three-quarters of a million pounds' worth of damage. The total loss - taking into reinstatement costs - came to just under £1 million, St Albans crown court heard.

Neagu, who came to the UK in 2015, broke onto the building site late on a Saturday afternoon and launched the revenge attack because he claimed his firm, called 'Danny Boy', was owed £16,000 by a sub-contractor building firm named Fentons.

Fentons had withheld the money because one of its vehicles, which was fitted with a tracker, ended up in Romania.

Dark-hair Neagu, who has a goatee beard, said he wanted to teach the two companies a lesson, took the two diggers to the homes just before 5.30pm on Saturday 11 August last year.

Neagu sat calmly in the the dock watching as the blue-armed digger with a scoop bucket crashed into 3 three-bed and 2 two-bed bungalows, smashing them down to their foundations.

He shouted 'f..... s... company' and sang the dance song 'Oh Nar Nar' as he took his revenge.

He came across a couple in the area saying: 'Hello. If you like to call the police. I did it because I didn't get the money. I have been working for McCarthy and Fentons. I did it.

'I had guys working for me. They haven't paid me. I decided even if I got into trouble I did it for a reason. I don't blame you for calling the police.. They ask for £400,000 for these homes. They don't have £16,000 to pay (me). I wanted to give them a lesson.'

He told another member of the public: 'I am not dangerous. Someone has called the police. Keep calm.'

Hertfordshire police arrived and he was arrested. In an interview he said his firm Danny Boy was carrying out groundwork for the company but was owed money. He said he was 'helpless, angry, disappointed and scared.'

He said he did not have money to pay the six people who had been working for him. He said he and his family had been
