Anna Grubb, 26, from Tasmania, is currently receiving treatment from Hodgkin's lymphoma. She has been struggling find work since her diagnosis because she is having chemotherapy and has to attend constant medical appointments. Now Centrelink have threatened to strip Ms Grubb of her benefits, arguing she needs to show more desire to find suitable employment. Centrelink have threatened to cut the benefits to a welfare recipient in Tasmania, claiming the cancer patient needs to 'find suitable employment' 'I'm just an emotional wreck constantly,' she told A Current Affair. 'It's just ridiculous and hard and stressful. It just puts so much more stress that I don't need, I'm trying to get better, not worse.' Centrelink has also chosen to reject Ms Grubb's application for a disability support pension on the basis her cancer is not terminal. The $2000 robodebt, a form of debt recovery, is understandably compounding her anxiety. Under the heavily criticised program, thousands of welfare recipients across Australia have received automated letters from Centrelink demanding they pay back debts they didn't even realise they had chalked up. Using ATO data, the system detects possible over-payments to welfare recipients. Hank Jongen, a spokesman for Centrelink, said the feedback - mainly negative - on the program has been taken into account. 'The letters and the online system that people can access have all undergone a significant overhaul, and let's face it, at the core of this is the protection of taxpayers money,' he said.
