A British woman who took her mother to a Swiss suicide clinic ended up dying without saying her last goodbye after suffering a brain bleed at the facility.

The 58-year-old had planned to be with her terminally ill mother, 95, who had cancer and wanted to end her suffering at the Dignitas clinic.

But their plans were shattered when the daughter fell ill with a headache and vomitting at the clinic.

While she was being transferred in a helicopter, her elderly mother, who was suffering from cancer, was given a lethal cocktail as planned. The daughter died the next day having missed the pensioner's death.

The harrowing incident happened in 2016, but has only recently been reported.

Local media has reported that the doctor who had been called to treat the unnamed 58-year-old had wrongly believed she was merely upset at the fact that her mother was about to die and had taken too many painkillers.

As a result the doctor is said to have prescribed her the drug Temesta to calm her down. Her symptoms at the time included a headache and being sick several times.

There was no doctor in the death room at the time when the deadly cocktail was due to be administered to the 95-year-old, according to reports.

Instead, only the so-called 'death companions' were there who organised the doctor to attend the younger woman after she was taken ill at around 11am.

The doctor who arrived as a result of the call gave the daughter Temesta through an injection an hour later at midday, after which she passed out but was still breathing.

In the meantime, just as the doctor was administering the drug, the 58-year-old woman's husband was landing at Zurich airport.

By the time he arrived at the hotel, he was given the message that he urgently needed to go to the Dignitas death room.

The man had flown to Switzerland to support his wife and to bring her home after she had said her farewells - but she never made the journey back.

Her husband arrived at the death room at around 5.30pm, where she was still on the sofa doubled up and breathing irregularly. She is said to have had foam around her mouth.

The doctor updated the husband as to what had happened, and told her what he had done, saying that the treatment he had administered would take a while to take effect, according to local media.
