A man who was shot dead by police was on a four-day drug bender when he killed the mother of his baby daughter in a jealous rage.

Tafari Walton, 21, threatened officers with a knife when they found him just before 9am on Thursday at his mother's house in Glendale, west of Newcastle in the NSW Hunter Region.

Officers opened fire on the dangerous criminal just 900m away from where he stabbed his ex-girlfriend Gabriella Thompson, 27, at her home in Glendale at 10.30am on Wednesday.

A furious Walton suspected Ms Thompson had been seeing another man when he murdered her, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Walton stabbed Ms Thompson in the head, under each armpit and cut her neck during the frenzied attack at her home.

His mother and step-father arrived at her house to find Ms Thompson bleeding to death.

Walton fled the scene in Ms Thompson's car.

The stabbing was the first part of a wild crime spree carried out by Walton throughout Newcastle.

About 2am on Thursday he went to a home in Dudley, 15km from the scene of Ms Thompson's murder, and threatened acquaintances with a knife.

He then stole a car before travelling to Wallsend at 5am, where he stole another car from a woman.

Police began pursuing Walton before he confronted an elderly woman at 8.30am in Glendale.

He demanded the woman give him her car keys, saying he urgently needed to see his mother.

Walton drove the woman's car to his mother's house, and was quickly followed by police.

Police officers approached Walton and tried to subdue him with capsicum spray.

Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell said Walton lunged towards officers with a 10cm hunting knife.

'Due to his actions, police had no other alternative... but to unfortunately fatally shoot the attacking person,' he said.
