The BBC has been branded ‘profligate’ after staff numbers rose more than 300 in three years to 21,583 –despite bosses vowing to make dramatic cuts.
The broadcaster said in 2016 it would make £800million in annual savings by 2021.
Bosses repeatedly boasted they have cut jobs to help meet this target. However, official figures show overall staff numbers have actually increased in this time because it hired more people than it got rid of.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen said: ‘It just shows us that the BBC has never had any austerity and never will do whilst it receives nearly £4billion a year in licence fee funding.’
He added: ‘It is profligate. The BBC is noted for its largesse – and yet they are pleading poverty.’
