More than five million homes are set to be equipped with smart energy meters that won’t work properly.

Energy suppliers have been ordered by the Government to start installing a new type of smart meter from now on.

However, The Mail on Sunday understands that these second-generation devices will not function properly in about 30 per cent of the country because they cannot yet be linked up with a central energy database.

Smart meters were supposed to start in 2014, but did not begin until 2017. By this month just 109,000 have been fitted, leaving suppliers having to install an extra 7.1million of the older meters during this time [File photo]
