A father who killed his 10-week-old son after shaking him so hard he suffered brain damage is facing jail time. 

Christopher Barnes, 28, claimed he was just comforting his son Harry, but the child was shaken so strongly his heart stopped beating. 

Harry was rushed to hospital, where he was put on life support, but he died having never regained consciousness.

After Barnes was convicted of manslaughter Harry's mother Laura Millins said the family 'finally have the truth' about what happened.

Lewes Crown Court heard how Barnes and baby Harry were alone at home when the child collapsed and lost consciousness.

The heating engineer from Midhurst, West Sussex, rushed the baby to Southampton Hospital in June 2018.

Harry died the following day - after suffering brain damage from two 'episodes of injury' - which were inflicted days apart.

Forensic pathologists had confirmed the baby's injuries had been 'consistent with baby shaking'.

Barnes denied causing the death, but a jury convicted him of manslaughter and GBH after a week-and-a-half-long trial.

Prosecutor Jennifer Knight said: 'Sometime before 12.37pm on 24th June 2017, ten week old Harry Barnes collapsed.

'His heart stopped beating and he stopped breathing.

'He never regained consciousness and he died the next day when life support was withdrawn.

'The medical evidence revealed that Harry Barnes' injuries had been caused during at least two episodes of injury, one around the time of his collapse and another several days earlier.
