Congressman James Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, compared President Trump to Hilter and warned he and his family are among the 'greatest threats to democracy' in his lifetime.

He said that Democrats need to 'grow a spine and confront' the president about his rhetoric but stopped short of endorsing calls for the Republican's impeachment.

'Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany. And he went about the business of discrediting institutions to the point that people bought into' it,' Clyburn told NBC News. 'Nobody would have believed it now. But swastikas hung in churches throughout Germany. We had better be very careful.'

Congressman James Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, compared President Trump to Hilter and warned he and his family are among the 'greatest threats to democracy' in his lifetime

Clyburn is the third-ranking Democrat in the House. He was campaigning in home state on Tuesday, when he made the remarks in response to Trump's latest assault on the late John McCain, a deceased U.S. senator the president has continued to lambast.

He said that Trump's comments about McCain, a former POW who died last year after a battle with cancer, was a 'hero of our United States armed services,' in the interview for NBC News.

'We are asking for dire consequences. And I think it's time for the Congress — House and Senate — to grow spines, and do what is necessary to protect this democracy. This
