A local resident, Bec Gallagher took aim at the supermarket chain after finding one of the figurines – a miniature leek – on a beach on Hamilton Island, Queensland, this week. 'How about you stop producing mass waste products and try something environmentally friendly for a change?' Ms Gallagher wrote on her Facebook page. She also questioned the supermarket giant directly. 'Hey Coles supermarkets, look what I found on Hamilton Island, is this yours?' Hamilton Island, Queensland resident, Bec Gallagher, found this Leo Leek Stikeez figurine (pictured) on one of the picturesque island's beaches The plastic promotional toy was found washed up on a beach on Hamilton Island, Queensland (pictured) this week Facebook users wrote in support of Ms Gallagher's post, questioning why Coles was producing the figurines after they had banned single use plastic bags last year. One post said 'stop killing the environment', while another read 'Coles doesn't care.' Coles has spent the last couple of months promoting the Stikeez campaign in partnership with the Healthy Kids Association. Unlike Coles' previous Little Shop campaign, the Stikeez range has been roundly condemned. The Stikeez figurines (pictured) have also attracted a petition signed by more than 12,000 people demanding that Coles stops 'plastic promotions' An email petition has been sent to Cole's CEO Steve Cain from more than 12,000 protesters saying they were sick of 'wasteful and useless plastic promotions.' 'They say it's to encourage healthy eating for kids. We say it's just going to lead to more plastic ending up in our oceans and landfills - it's a disgraceful waste,' the petition labelled 'stick your stikeez coles' said. 'This campaign is about telling Coles and the other big retailers that they need to do better. No more plastic promotions!' it added. A spokesperson for the supermarket giant said that the plastic wrappers (pictured right) in which the figures are packaged, can be recycled at any Coles store A spokesperson for Coles earlier told Yahoo that the figurines were designed to be kept for a long time, not just to be disposed off. 'Customers can choose not to receive them and for those who do we hope they enjoy them for a long time into the future,' the spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that the wrappers used to wrap the toys can be recycled at their nearest Coles store.
