Virginia transit officials have said the state should stick with traditional railways and roads for now after checking out a tunnel dug by Elon Musk's Boring Company.
Tech billionaire Musk unveiled his plans in December last year and said the future system will make vehicles 'capable of traveling safely at over 150 mph' when complete.
But Michael McLaughlin, Virginia's chief of rail transportation, said: 'It's a car in a very small tunnel. If one day we decide it's feasible, we'll obviously come back to you.
'We'll give Elon Musk and the Boring Company credit for at least trying.'
The Virginia Mercury reports the Commonwealth Transportation Board's public transit subcommittee has been looking into the state's rail infrastructure.
They are said to have been considering a $1.3 billion bridge between Virginia and Washington but wanted to see if Musk's idea was more viable.
