A six-year-old boy has caused panic with a hoax 911 call claiming that a school shooter had killed five and taken the principal hostage.

Police in Conway, Arkansas rushed to Marguerite Vann Elementary after receiving the call at about 5.33pm on Monday, from a 'young caller' saying someone was trying to 'shoot up the school,' the Conway Police Department said.

The boy said that five people had been shot, and that the principal was in the office with the shooter, but dispatchers became suspicious when the details of his story kept constantly changing.

'Multiple Conway Police Officers immediately responded to the location along with other nearby agencies,' the department said in a statement.
