An Afghan man who came to Australia as the guardian of his three siblings says the family lives in fear after a stranger tried to kill him with a shoelace.

David John Pearce insists the daylight attack was not premeditated, but a case of mistaken identity.

Pearce was earlier this month found guilty of attempting to murder Abdolhadi Moradi, 28, on a footpath north of Adelaide in January 2018.
