A priest in California has been arrested on 30 counts of suspected child sex abuse involving one child, according to police. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said that Father David Mendoza-Vela, 42, was arrested on 30 counts of suspected child sexual physical abuse that occurred over an 18-month period on March 30. Authorities said that the investigation revealed that one child victim had allegedly been abused during the period while Mendoza-Vela was working at St. John's Catholic Church in San Lorenzo, California, between 2016 and 2017, according to a statement posted on Facebook. The adult then told police about it. No additional details were provided about the victim or the alleged abuse. Mendoza-Vela worked at St. John's Catholic Church from 2013 to 2016, and was then transferred to Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fremont, California. The Bishop of Oakland released a memo to parishioners the day Mendoza-Vela was charged, notifying them that the priest had been placed on administrative leave. As the investigation continues, Mendoza-Vela 'may not present himself in public as a priest nor engage in any priestly ministry,' Bishop Michael C. Barber wrote. Barber stated that Mendoza-Vela's 'alleged behavior is in clear violation of the Diocese's code of conduct and the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People,' and also urged anyone with pertinent information about the case to contact Fremont Police immediately. He also encouraged people to report allegations of sexual misconduct by a church authority or volunteer to police and the Chancellor for the Diocese of Oakland, Stephen Wilcox. Mendoza-Vela was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California, where his bail was set at $900,000. Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) members handed out leaflets to parishioners on Sunday, asking potential witnesses and other victims to come forward. Alameda County police said that they did not know of any other child victims at the moment, but encouraged other victims step forward and report their suspected abuse to authorities. El Salvador-born Mendoza-Vela is a legal resident who arrived in the US in 2008 and was ordained as a priest in 2013, KPIX reported. SNAP is asking that Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley confiscate Mendoza-Vela’s passport. Oakland diocese priest Rev. Alexander Castillo, of Costa Rica, was accused of child sex abuse in February and is believed to have fled the country, the Mercury News reported.
