Unemployed Australians living on welfare will now benefit from a government power bill handout - after they were snubbed in Tuesday's budget. 

Scott Morrison initially excluded Newstart recipients from the rebate in his budget announcement - but less than 12 hours later he backflipped after fierce criticism. 

The power bill rebate - $75 for singles and $125 for couples - was originally only available to aged and disability pensioners, carers, veterans and single parents. 

But the government was criticised by the Opposition for excluding the unemployed from the energy rebate, with seniors' advocates arguing older Australians had been left out in the cold.
