The suspect and another man, 22-year-old Antonio Harper, were driving at speed in a stolen Mercedes-Benz convertible in Daytona Beach, Florida, when suddenly their vehicle collided head-on with a delivery truck. Fleeing the wreckage, the currently unidentified driver leaped from the vehicle and attempted to carjack the near-by SUV, which was parked outside of a convenience store, in Holly Hill. In the car was a woman, who declined to identify herself to the media, and her two-year-old son. The woman’s husband was inside the store buying cigarettes. The crashed Mercedes then caught fire, prompting the husband to search for a fire extinguisher in the store, and the woman attempted to get out of the SUV - parked near the burning wreck - with her son. Grabbing the closest thing she could find, the mother picked up a can of Progresso Homestyle Soup, struck the man with it, and urged him to get away from the car. The woman used the can of soup to prevent the man driving off with her young son in the back-seat The suspect then ran away from the scene on foot, leaving behind an unconscious Antonio Harper, who was stuck in the front seat of the stolen mercedes. ‘The driver is still on the run. We're working right now to identify him,’ the Holly Hill Police Chief Stephen Aldrich said in a statement. ‘We do have some leads we're working.’ According to the department, officers recovered several blood droplets within the vehicle which they believe belong to the suspect at large. His identity has not been released. Meanwhile, Antonio was found to be armed with a concealed and stolen gun by attending officers. While being handcuffed, he allegedly kept shouting at the officers urging them to let him go, according to the Daytona Beach News Journal. Harper had already been facing charged from an arrest in March, in which police said he was in possession of a .380 caliber pistol that had been stolen in New Smyrna Beach. He remains in the Volusia County Branch Jail and is being held on a $7,500 bail bond. The driver of the delivery truck was unharmed in the crash and decline treatment from attending paramedics. The car in which the assailant and Harper had been driving was stolen from Dayton Beach Shores sometime on Monday. In a police report, one officer said he spotted the car-thieves making an illegal U-turn in the middle of a busy high-way shortly before the crash, but didn’t pursue the vehicle.
