I actually am': Failed Georgia governor hopeful Stacey Abrams says she might run for president but thinks she has until September to decide – AFTER the first three debates By Francesca Chambers, Senior White House Correspondent For Dailymail.com Published: 15:24 BST, 4 April 2019 | Updated: 15:24 BST, 4 April 2019 Viewcomments Stacey Abrams says she's still considering a presidential run and believes she can hold off on a decision until Labor Day or later. 'I don't think you actually have to make a decision about the White House before the fall,' she said Thursday on 'Morning Joe' to Mika Brzezinski. Taken aback, Brzezinski, told her, 'Oh! Okay.' Three Democratic presidential debate will have taken place by then, in June, July and August, with the potential for a fourth debate on a not-yet-determined date in September to have passed, as well. Stacey Abrams says she's still considering a presidential run and believes she can hold off on a decision until Labor Day or longer The first caucus, in Iowa, will be held three months later, with New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada voting shortly after that. Abrams is currently on a book tour, and she said that's slowed down her decision-making process on a presidential bid. She's also mulling a pleas from Chuck Schumer to run for the U.S. Senate. He tapped her this year to give the rebuttal to Donald Trump's joint address to Congress in an attempt to generate enthusiasm for a possible Senate run. But Abrams has her sights on another office - the Oval Office - and could join the 20-odd Democrats actively courting their party's early-state voters. Abrams indicated Wednesday at the National Action Network conference that the Rev. Al Sharpton holds annually in New York that she plans to run for federal office. She just hasn't decided which office she will go after next, following her failure to defeat Republican Brian Kemp in Georgia's gubernatorial race last year. Her grandmother's death also affected her, she told attendees of the civil rights advocacy conference. 'She did not live to see me take an oath of office,' Abrams said, before adding, 'Now I don't know which oath is coming up next.' Audience chants of 'Run, Stacey, Run' drowned out what she said next. Brzezinski on 'Morning Joe' asked her about the inaudible remarks. 'I said, "Stop talking, I gotta finish my speech," ' Abrams told the MSNBC host. Encouraging her, Brzezinski said 'You should jump in.' 'I am thinking about it. I truly I am,' Abrams said of the Democratic presidential contest. She said she wants to decide on the Senate race in Georgia first, 'Because I do think you cannot run for an office unless you know that's the job you want to do.' 'I don't think you use offices as stepping stones,' she said. 'And then the next conversation for me will be, if not the Senate then what else?' Brzezinski told her that time is running out, and Abrams said that her Senate decision is will be made in the next few weeks. She said intended to decide by March, but 'had to push it back,' because of her book tour and now plans to settle it this month. 'And then I don't think you actually have to make a decision about the White House before the fall,' she'd said. Abrams was the minority leader of in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2011 to 2017 and ran for governor of the state last year. She has never held federal office any kind. She indicated that she's not scared off by that, or the size of the Democratic field. 'I don't believe that there is an imperative to do so before September,' she insisted.
