Lauren Miranda was fired from Bellport Middle School in Long Island, New York, last month when students started circulating a topless selfie she had sent a former boyfriend in 2016. She does not know how they got a hold of the photograph but is suing the school district for gender discrimination on the grounds that a male teacher would not be fired in the same way as she has been. In an interview with ABC's Nightline about her ordeal, she recalled the moment she was called into her principal's office to discuss the photograph. Lauren Miranda was fired from Bellport Middle School in Long Island, New York, last month over a topless selfie she sent an old boyfriend in 2016 which resurfaced Miranda sent this image to an ex-boyfriend in 2016. Last month, it somehow started circulating among students at the middle school where she was a math teacher He had it up on his computer screen and turned it around to show her. 'When I initially got questioned, my principal was in possession of it and spun his computer monitor round and there's the picture of myself,' she said. Miranda said she felt as though her privacy had been 'invaded' and she got in her car to drive home but had to pull over and vomit because she was so upset. Principal Dr. M. Jamal Colson pulled the image up on his computer screen, spun it around, and asked her about it 'I was hysterical. I was shaking, I was driving home and I'm on the phone either with my cousin or my mom and I had to pull over and actually vomit. 'I have never been so upset that it caused me to get sick. I've never felt so small before,' she said. The next week, Miranda was told she had been fired after a union vote. She was outraged by the decision and is now suing the school district for $3million. The former math teacher said she still does not know how the photograph got into students' hands but that it is not her primary concern. 'It is absolutely absurd that I am being fired over my chest. A picture of my upper torso has dismantled and ruined my entire life,' she said, adding that she was entitled to a 'private life'. 'I sent this picture to the person I was seeing at the time. It was literally just a snap of myself that I took while I was getting ready one morning,' she said. She first learned that the photograph was being circulated when another teacher in a different building text her about it. 'I went to school on Friday and I get a text from a friend of mine in a different building and she says that the kids are saying they have a naked photo of you and that your picture is going around. Miranda said she feels as though she has been discriminated against because she is a woman 'I was offended that she would say that a kid has a naked photo of me, like how?' she recalled. Miranda is convinced that a male teacher would never have faced the same rbuke. 'Men and women are equal. It's 2019, my chest is no more offensive than a man's chest. Why am I being penalized whereas if a man took this picture, he wouldn't be in the same situation I'm in. 'This photo was sent between two adults. Yes 'm a teacher, do I carry out my role model face in environments where I might run into students or families? Absolutely. 'I'm entitled to a private life though.' The school district declined to comment citing the ongoing litigation. Read more: Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site dailymail and under his responsibility
