Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is approaching an unwanted Major League record after going hitless in his last 35 at-bats dating back to the 2018 season, and is now just 11 outs shy of the all-time mark set by former San Francisco Giants infielder Eugenio Velez.
Davis, a former All-Star and two-time American League home run leader, went 0-for-3 in Thursday's home opener, striking out three times before being replaced with a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
Further fueling the criticism towards Davis is the fact that he will make $23 million this season after signing a seven-year, $161 million deal with the team in 2016.
Including his 11 strikeouts in 2019, Davis has whiffed on about 35 percent of his plate appearances since signing that contract.
