Suzy Challen is pictured with her sons after being released on bail

This is the first picture of Georgina Challen, who killed her husband in a hammer attack, since she walked free from prison on bail yesterday - after her murder conviction was quashed on appeal.

A tweet posted by her family shows Challen sitting with her sons David, 31, and James, 35, who had both been campaigning for her release, along with the message: 'First day home with our mother after 9 years in prison'.

Challen, 65 - known as Sally - of Claygate, Surrey, was jailed for life in 2011 for the murder of her 61-year-old husband Richard Challen in August 2010.

But her conviction was quashed on appeal earlier this year after judges heard allegations she had been a victim of 'coercive control' and that she had been suffering from undiagnosed mental disorders that were never mentioned at her original trial.

Challen, who admitted killing her husband but always denied murder, had asked the appeal judges to downgrade her conviction to manslaughter, which would have led to her freedom.

The court instead ordered a retrial for murder, but a judge granted her bail on Friday ahead of the new court case this summer.

Challen, who appeared in court via a videolink from prison, wept as the judge granted her bail.

Speaking outside court on Friday, her son David said: 'Today we are overjoyed that bail has been granted for our mother and she will be now released back to us. Our mother now rejoins our family.

Asked what it will be like when she walks out of prison on Saturday, he said: 'It's a massive moment.'

He added: 'It's a happy day for us, we get to see her again.'

Mr Challen, who said he had not yet spoken to his mother following the hearing, said the family is looking forward to 'being together again after so long'.

The defendant's brother Chris Jenney said: 'The family are all supporting Sally. We have done from day one. Our strength's built and will build even further. This is a fantastic day for us.'

Earlier at Friday's hearing, the 65-year-old,of Claygate, Surrey, pleaded guilty to her husband's manslaughter but not guilty to murder.

She was previously jailed for life for the murder of the former car dealer following a trial at Guildford Crown Court in 2011.

But her conviction was quashed and a retrial ordered at the Court of Appeal in London in February, in light of new evidence relating to Challen's state of mind at the time of the killing and the issue of 'coercive control'.
