Love letters written by Nikolas Cruz to a female pen pal in the United Kingdom have offered a unique view into the mind of the Parkland shooter as he sits behind bars in a Florida prison.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel obtained 46 pages of Cruz's handwritten notes from the Broward State Attorney's Office, in which the now 20-year-old mass murderer reveals the life he wishes he could build for himself.

Most of the dreams detailed in Cruz's notes, including his desire to get married and raise a family, will likely never come to fruition as he stands trial for shooting dead 17 people in cold blood at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.

Cruz is facing a minimum of life in prison without parole, and the Florida state attorney is seeking the death penalty.

In his letters, which have been introduced as evidence in the case against him, Cruz holds on to hope that he may one day be released from jail.

Nowhere in the correspondence does Cruz specifically mention his horrific Valentine's Day massacre, writing at one point that talking about it 'would be a bad idea'.

However, in one letter he recommends that his pen pal listen to the song Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People, which is about a school shooting.

He also writes that if he had kids he would want to name the sons after guns - Kalashnikov, Makarov and Remington - and would let his wife name any daughters.

'I really want kids. I think of it all the time, you know the joy they bring,' he writes.

The letters by Cruz, a lifelong special education student who experts say likely falls on the autism spectrum, are riddled with spelling errors and childish drawings.

The public defender's office has reportedly not ruled out using Cruz's developmental disabilities to keep
