An oral history of John F Kennedy and the launch of George magazine reveals new details about the iconic shot of Cindy Crawford as George Washington that covered the inaugural issue.
The Hollywood Reporter took a look back at first son and his instantly successful magazine ahead of the 20th anniversary of his tragic death.
It turns out that it was not John Jr or even a members of the magazine's editorial or creative staff who came up with the idea, but rather Carolyn Bessette.
Creative director Matt Berman recalled that it all came together over a dinner one night with John Jr, Carolyn and esteemed fashion photographer Herb Ritts.
Once the concept was devised, Crawford's name was floated out as a possibility and Carolyn immediately piped in to say: 'That is perfect. She is apple pie. All-American. Self-made. She's it.'
Ritts then called Crawford from the restaurant to let her know what was about to happen, and the supermodel was quickly on board with the idea.

'Herb called and said, "John Kennedy's going to call you about being on the cover of this magazine,"' recalled Crawford.
