Children at a primary school where a five metre crocodile was shot and killed were throwing food scraps to the dangerous reptile.

The predator was found lurking in Cowal Creek, which runs behind Northern Peninsula Area State College's Injinoo Junior Campus in Cape York, Far North Queensland.

Students at the primary school were believed to have been throwing food into the creek after lunch, giving crocodiles reason to drift inward toward the riverbed whenever the bell sounded.
