A festival that includes an event where participants simulate swimming from Manus Island to Australia has provoked outrage.

An artist has arranged an event at Bleach festival on the Gold Coast which will see people collectively swim around 1,000km - the distance between Manus Island and Australia.

The participants will wear island-shaped hats while they take to a swimming pool for the 'endurance act'.

But Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has slammed the event, which is partly funded by the local council.
