A powerful criminal cartel in Mexico is suspected of kidnapping five young men in the western state of Jalisco, holding them hostage for five days and cutting off one of their fingers before their released on Tuesday.

Aged between 18 and 25, the victims told the State Attorney General's office that they were at a residence in the town of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga when a group of armed and masked men burst ion to the Los Encinos housing complex on April 10.

The suspects overpowered the group, tied their hands up and blindfolded each one of them before they were driven to an undisclosed hideout.

The men say they were beaten throughout
