A father-of-three has returned to the water just five months after he almost died from a vicious shark attack while surfing.

Joel Mason, 36, is lucky to be alive after he was mauled by a shark while surfing at Naambucca Heads on the New South Wales mid-north coast in December last year.

He suffered five deep cuts to his lower legs and was rapidly losing blood.
