Speaking on his podcast with Danny Baker, the 58-year-old Match of the Day host said Gascoigne targeted the 6ft 3ins tall Dutch player at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Ahead of the game, the second group match in the tournament on June 16 which ended 0-0, the then 23-year-old Gascoigne, known as Gazza, teased Gullit in the tunnel at the Stadio Sant'Elia in Cagliari. 'When we played Holland in the 1990 World Cup in the second game, he was going round pulling Ruud Gullit's dreadlocks. 'He was just going 'beep, beep, beep' and Rudd Gullit's going 'What's he doing? Who is this kid?' Gary Linekar told the story on his podcast with Danny Baker and said he 'couldn't stop laughing' at the time Linekar said, '[Gascoigne] was just going 'beep, beep, beep' on the dreadlocks and he was just doing it for a laugh Gullit has since ditched the dreadlocks and is seen regularly as a pundit on TV alongside Linekar Danny Baker piped up: 'I saw it in the tunnel...he's not doing it to rile him up or for psychological advantage, he's doing it for a laugh', to which Linker replied: 'I know, I know.' Gullit, who played 66 times for Holland, eventually ditched his dreadlocks several years ago and now has a short back and sides and is a regular pundit on TV. Speaking after getting the dreadlocks lopped off, the former Chelsea player and manager said: 'It's not been easy without the locks but I needed to carve a different image different from when I was playing.' The 1990 World Cup in Italy was the first time England reached the semi-finals since claiming the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966. But his tournament ended in tears after he received a booking in the semi-final against West Germany, ruling him out of the final if England were to reach it. Gary Linekar was then famously caught on camera telling manager Bobby Robson to 'have a word' with the devastated youngster. In the end, England lost to Germany on penalties after Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed their spot-kicks in the country's first ever shoot-out, setting a precedent for the following years. England failed to reach another World Cup semi-final until 2018 when Gareth Southgate's Three Lions crashed out to Croatia.
