Salvatore Niosi, 82, died on December 13, 2013, at the Woodhaven Center of Care on Long Island. According to the New York Post, Niosi choked to death after a nurse at the facility forgot to put in his dentures and fed him a sandwich. Following his death, Niosi's daughter, Silvia Teixeira, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the nursing home in June 2015. Niosi had been at the center for six years when the incident occurred. He had suffered multiple multiple strokes that left him wheelchair-bound and unable to swallow properly, according to the Post. Niosi was only supposed to consume pureed food. On the night of his death in 2013, a nurse fed him a sandwich without reading his chart and he choked to death within three minutes. According to the Post, the nursing home eventually admitted its error and a jury awarded Niosi's family $1million.
