Countryside campaigners are claiming that the number of chickens in Wales alone will reach 10million by the end of this year.
The Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales is alarmed at the boom in poultry farms and has claimed applications for new units 'virtually never' get refused.
The charity's estimate could mean that the number of chickens in Wales may outnumber the 9.5million sheep.
