A family were forced to find an out-of-hours vet 400 miles from their home when their beloved Labradoodle fell ill after eating a hot cross bun. 

Keith Jeary has now issued a warning to other owners after his three-year-old pet dog Ralph nearly died from eating the popular Easter treat.  

Mr Jeary, 65, was holidaying with his family near Edinburgh, and desperately tried to find a vet in the remote countryside.

Mr Jeary said: 'We were about 400 miles from home, in the countryside near Penicuik. The minute I saw the plate with nothing on it alarm bells started to ring.

Why do hot cross buns pose a danger to dogs? 

Hot cross buns traditionally contain sultanas - which can have a lethal effect on some dogs.  

Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas are all toxic to dogs and it is believed the dried forms of these fruits
