British musicians are losing out to US rivals in the UK album charts due to a bias in the way their music is presented in streaming platforms,  experts have suggested.

According to figures for the last year from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), albums released by American artists took a 45 per cent share of the market -  compared to 42 per cent for UK musicians. 

The singles chart figures were similar, with Americans claiming their highest ever share - 44 per cent, while British artists only claimed 40 per cent in the singles chart - their second lowest ever.

According to figures for the last year from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), albums released by American artists took a 45 per cent share of the market - compared to 42 per cent for UK musicians. BPI  said that it believed Americans were taking a larger share of the albums chart as a result of US soundtrack albums like a A Star is Born, which was performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (pictured)

Mark Mulligan, a music analyst for Midia Research, said users of Spotify and Apple Music are being steered towards American music by recommendations and playlists compiled by US companies.    

He told The Sunday Times the album chart is no longer confined to album sales but includes 'streaming equivalent albums', which are made up of the number of times a track is streamed, divided by 1,000.
