Angler becomes the sixth drowning victim after he's swept off rocks by rough ...

A fisherman has drowned after being washed off rocks on Monday morning - bringing the Easter long weekend's drownings to six.

The man was fishing from at Boulder Beach, near Lennox Head in northern New South Wales, just before midday, before being swept into the sea, police said.

Several surfers paddled out to the man and tried to support him in the water on a surfboard.

The surfers then brought the unconscious man to land, where they tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

Police are now preparing a report for the Coroner, and officers are have begun an investigation.

The tragic death is the sixth in Australian waters over the Easter weekend.

The fisherman's death comes after four teenagers were winched to safety by a rescue helicopter on Monday, after spending nearly 24 hours stranded near Kondalilla Falls in Queensland.

The teens were swimming at Baroon Pocket Dam on Sunday morning when they were washed away by fast-flowing water - ending up hundreds of metres downstream.

'The area around the boys was too steep, so they decided to stay put and bunker down for the night,' Rick Harvey from RACQ LifeFlight Rescue said.

Last night, family members went looking for the boys and found their shoes early this morning before calling the rescue helicopter.

Within just five minutes of searching, the helicopter found all four boys - waving furiously at the chopper - about 600 metres downstream.

The group was winched to safety by the flight paramedic, and were all luckily okay.
