'All the three runners were hit with a life ban from all road running races under the CAA,' Xinhua news agency reported. 'The CAA also reiterated that it will continue to crack down all kinds of cheats in marathon in order to build a healthy and clean environment of road running in China.'

As MSN.com reported, one of the three had a finishing time of 5 hours and 50 minutes, which is far slower than the qualifying time of 3 hours and five minutes for people between the ages of 18 to 34, suggesting that particular runner falsified some aspect of their application.

The Boston Athletic Association released its own statement on Monday.

'The overwhelming majority of Boston Marathon participants and finishers adhere to Boston Marathon rules and standards, but each year a small number of participants aim to take part and/or finish through improper means,' the statement read.
