Theresa May praised the volunteers who joined the Mail's 'fantastic initiative' to clean up public spaces across the UK

The Great British Spring Clean comes to an end today after the biggest environmental action the country has ever seen helped rid the land of vast amounts of litter.

Theresa May led tributes to the incredible efforts of the 563,163 volunteers – including 175,055 children – who came together to clean up beaches, towns, rivers and the countryside.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy in partnership with the Daily Mail, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to collect 900,000 bags of discarded litter. In some cases the rubbish – which was recycled where possible – dated back decades, with brands not seen since the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Praising the hard work of all involved – which ranged from hundreds of people in mass clear-ups to individuals making a difference on their own – Mrs May said: 'More than half a million people have given their time
