The sister of a woman whose body was found in Melbourne's Chinatown revealed the 32-year-old had been dating the man charged with her murder.

Christopher Allen Bell, 32, is charged with killing 32-year-old Natalina Angok from Geelong, whose body was found early yesterday at the corner of a dead-end laneway.

Natalina's sister Helena claimed the pair had been dating for a year, before the woman's death.

'They were dating, in a relationship,' she told The Age.

'That was her boyfriend. [They had been dating] for a very long time, I think together for like a year or a year and a half.'

Bell sat in the dock of Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday with a lowered head as his lawyer Steven Pica said the accused had been un-medicated for a long time.

He had been released from a mental inpatient facility 'only a week ago', after staying for a week, the court was told.
