Giant sumo wrestlers tried to make babies wail by jiggling them around in a bizarre Japanese contest.

The 400-year-old Nakizumo festival held across Japan each year is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring the the youngsters good health and fortune.

One hundred and sixty babies born in 2018 took part in one of the events held at Sensoji Temple in Tokyo in which  the more screaming is considered to be the better.

Traditionally dressed sumo wrestlers carried the youngsters into a circle where they then face off against one another.

The hulking sumo wrestlers then bounced them up and down to try and get them to cry first, with the one that cried first declared the winner.
