Parents who faced the woman accused of blackmailing them with photos of their dying baby in her last hours described their fury over seeing her upset in court.

Siti Nurhidayah Kamal, 24, is accused of contacting the parents of 11-month old Amiyah Windross and asking for $1000 for the return of a stolen mobile phone which contained precious photos of their dying child.

She was refused bail on Monday amid fears she will attempt to flee the country, and appeared visibly upset.

The couple told Sunrise on Tuesday they felt 'a surge of anger' when they saw her crying.

'She has no idea what we have been through in the past week, the past 11 months, so to see her upset was a bit of a slap in the face.'

Her parents, Jay and Dee Windross, said they had only just been told to say their final goodbyes to their daughter when Kamal contacted them.

They were told there was a significant and irreversible change in Amiyah's brain, and were sitting at her bedside in the hospital.

'It's despicable. It's disgusting,' Ms Windross said.

'Why would anyone do that and she knew the position we were in. You could tell by the messages. How could you be so disgraceful?'

Kamal, a mother of two herself, reached out Mr and Mrs Windross last Tuesday after they made a desperate public plea for the return of the Samsung Galaxy S8 phone.

Mr Windross said she continued to text him through the night while he had been trying to spend 'every emotional minute' with his child.

'It was a hoax. Not only was it a complete and utter waste of my time, it was interrupting my final moments with my dying daughter,' he wrote on Facebook.
