Detectives are investigating whether a woman was already dead when a Mercedes collided with her on the M66 motorway causing tailbacks for more than ten hours.
Police are studying cameras in a bid to establish how the woman ended up on the busy stretch near Bury in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Officers have appealed for any drivers who may have been on the road to come forward with information after they rushed to the scene at around 2.25am.
The woman's loved ones are being supported by specially-trained officers, as is the driver of the Mercedes, who stopped at scene.
