Crystal Lake, Illinois boy AJ Freund, 5, was murdered and his body found in a shallow grave on April 24 Shocking photos reveal the filthy and deplorable state of AJ Freund's parent's Illinois home in 2012 and 2013, just months before he was born. Five-year-old Crystal Lake boy AJ Freund was murdered, suffering multiple blunt force injuries to the head, and his body was found buried in a shallow grave in a field on April 24. His parents Andrew Freund, 60, and JoAnn Cunningham, 36, have been charged with the child's murder, a week after they reported him missing. Investigators say that the Department of Child and Family Services had visited the Freund home 17 times over the last five years. In those visits, authorities described the squalid condition of the home, the apparent drug use of the parents who are 'known and self-admitted prior narcotics abusers' and concern for the welfare of AJ and his four-year-old brother Parker. Police said the home was found to be in 'hoarder-like condition' with garbage bags of 'wet refuse' stacked in the basement and garbage area when they visited following reports of AJ gone missing. Newly released photos offer a look at the Crystal Lake home the parents owned in 2012 and 2013 and offer insight into the dire conditions little AJ likely grew up in. AJ's parents JoAnn Cunningham, 36, and Andrew Freund Sr, 60, have been charged in his murder. Authorities say the two have a history with drugs, had been visited by the Department of Child and Family Services multiple times, and their house was in 'hoarder-like condition' Pictures inside the home show how the family lived in squalid conditions unsafe to raise a child in. Photos inside the couple’s bathroom and kitchen show that tiles are missing from the ground. One photo shows dog feces and mouse excrement covering the floor near bedding. The photos show the home was a dangerous environment to raise a child in as furniture had sharp edges, animal feces was littered on the ground, peeling paint was found on the walls and ceiling, and piles of garbage left to rot around the house. Newly released court records reveal how investigators cracked the case of A.J.’s horrific murder and how the parents were charged in his death. Investigators showed AJ's father Andrew Freund a disturbing two-minute video they uncovered from his wife Cunningham’s phone. In that video AJ is seen lying naked on a mattress and holding an ice pack to his face while being berated by his mother for urinating on the bed. He said that the mother punished the boy for soiling himself by giving him a 20-minute, cold shower. Freund Sr. then put AJ to bed 'cold, wet, and naked' and said Cunningham later went to check on him and found him dead. Contrary to that account, AJ died suffering blows to the head according to an autopsy report. They had originally lied and reported the child missing to police on April 18. According to the affidavit, Freund Sr. kept AJ’s body in a plastic tote bag for days in their home’s basement before burying the child in a field in Woodstock, Illinois. Freund and Cunningham separately appeared in court on Monday. Both have been charged with five counts of first-degree murder, as well as aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, and failure to report a missing child or child death. Freund is also charged with concealing a body. Their court appearance came as it was revealed that AJ told a hospital ER doctor 'maybe mommy didn't mean to hurt me' just four months before his death. He also told the doctor: 'Maybe someone hit me with a belt.' All rights reserved for this news site dailymail and under his responsibility
