Boris Johnson boasted he voted in local elections yesterday despite polls in his London constituency not taking place.

The former foreign secretary tweeted his support for the Conservatives and encouraged his 550,000 followers to do the same.

But he had to delete the post when he soon realised his mistake.

The message was left on his profile for just under a minute after other social media users pointed out no polls were taking place in London.

However, screenshots of the tweet were taken and shared online.

In the tweet, posted at around 8pm with just two hours left of voting, Mr Johnson told his followers to 'get out and vote'.
