Liberal MP John Alexander has urged Fijians facing rising sea levels brought on by climate change to 'move to higher ground'.

The Bennelong MP appeared at a forum at Epping Uniting Church on Monday where he responded to Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama's plea asking Australia to stop contributing to flooding with coal burning.

Alexander, instead, suggested the Australian government should help islanders move their settlements to higher land, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

'It's very much like your house is on fire, your children are in the house - should you call the fire brigade and get the children out of the house?' he said at the event.
