A violent fight broke out between conflicting Antifa and far-right protesters outside of an Oregon bar following May Day and Loyalty Day celebrations, where the groups sprayed each other with bear spray and a woman was allegedly beat unconscious. The fight broke out Wednesday evening outside of Cider Riot in Portland, where an Antifa-hosted event was taking place with live music to celebrate May Day. Antifa, a left-wing autonomous, anti-fascist group, observed May Day in Portland on Wednesday. The international day honors workers and hundreds of people clad in black gathered in parks to rally for the rights of immigrants, workers, and other marginalized groups. At the same time, far-right activists who share the opposite ideals of Antifa members, observed 'Loyalty Day' and held rival protests to celebrate loyalty to American ideals. The pepper spraying and yelling escalated into physical confrontations in the streets. One video of the violence posted by freelance journalist Mike Bivins shows someone throw a drink at the far-right protesters. They respond by deploying a chemical spray, dousing the group in bear spray. The fight quickly moved away from the bar and into the streets, resulting in a woman being allegedly punched and knocked unconscious. Joey Gibson, the founder of far-right group Patriot Prayer, was a part of the mob that crashed the bar, according to several patrons. 'Patriot Prayer and their affiliates showed up, and started pepper-spraying people on our property,' Cider Riot owner Abram Goldman-Armstrong said to Oregon Live. 'I was sleeping, and I heard the noise and woke up. I see bottles being shattered, people screaming obscenities,'Local man Quintin Robinson said on the fight Cops arrived to the scene 20 minutes after the fight, no arrests were made Local Quintin Robinson, who lives across the street from the bar, told the outlet that he say the groups throwing objects at each other and hitting each other with bear spray. 'I was sleeping, and I heard the noise and woke up. I see bottles being shattered, people screaming obscenities,' Robinson said on the chaos. Journalist and photographer Andy Ngo said he was attacked by Antifa members in the scene and pepper sprayed in the face as rioters laughed. 'I was sprayed in the face point blank with pepper spray outside the @CiderRiot, where Antifa had amassed. They cheered as I was blinded. Before that, they threatened me & brought up my mother’s name. A woman helped me across the street,' he tweeted Wednesday. 'They didn’t respond when it happened, and they left us hung out to dry, and to be assaulted by these thugs who don’t even live here,' Goldman-Armstrong said. 'Members of a known hate group are allowed to assault people. I’m very upset with [Portland Mayor] Ted Wheeler for not doing anything,' he added. In a news release said they did not find an unconscious person at the scene and no one wanted to file a police report. No arrests were made in the brawl. Authorities said they are reviewing video footage and photographs of the incident and try to identify people involved in criminal activity.
