Tory MP is reduced to tears after seeing her party lose the city council they once held by a huge majority to the Liberal Democrats By Richard Spillett for MailOnline Published: 13:14 BST, 3 May 2019 | Updated: 13:14 BST, 3 May 2019 Viewcomments A Tory MP couldn't hold back the tears after seeing her local party lose control of a local council in which they previously had a huge majority. MP Vicky Ford became upset during a TV interview after a bad night for the Tories in which they lost control of Chelmsford council. The local party had started the night with 52 of the 57 seats on the City Council, an apparently unassailable lead. But their vote crashed, leading to the Lib Dems taking 31 seats and winning control of the council. MP Vicky Ford wept today after watching her local party lose a 45-seat majority on Chelmsford City Council Ms Ford was asked by a BBC reporter what her reaction was and as she tried to speak she had to cover her face as she wept. After composing herself, the reporter asked the question again and Ms Ford replied: 'I think it is really disappointing when you look at some of the individuals who have lost their seats tonight. 'People who have worked their socks off for Chelmsford. 'Some of those councillors who have really worked so hard and helped to make Chelmsford so fantastic. 'They have lost their seats as a result of what is happening nationally reflecting back in people not wanting to turn out and vote locally.' Nationally, the Conservatives shed more than 400 seats and 16 councils in early results, with voters apparently expressing frustration at the Government's failure to deliver Brexit as promised on March 29. There were calls from Tory MPs for Theresa May's removal as leader, with senior Brexiteer Sir Bernard Jenkin warning that the party would be "toast" unless it "mends its ways pretty quickly".
