An AFL star player needed to be hauled from a swimming pool after he nearly drowned during an underwater training session gone wrong.

Melbourne Demons star forward Christian Petracca, 26, was training at the Sports and Aquatic Centre on Tuesday when he needed to be pulled out of the pool.

The 26-year-old was taking part in an underwater hypoxia exercise, where players are deprived of oxygen in a bid to improve their ability to function with less oxygen.
